Margot Robbie has become the poster girl for new-age elegance

The image of Margot Robbie standing contrapposto in a green Bottega Veneta evening gown was all it took to break the internet one mid-November morning. The 32-year-old actress had been walking the red carpet at the 13th annual Governors Awards in Los Angeles, and the stage was set for a signature Robbie ensemble—a lace dress or monochrome skirt suit perhaps, something that at least pointed to the uptown girl-style she’s spent years cultivating with Chanel. But that day, stylist Kate Young diverged from the tweed path. Instead, she sheathed Robbie in Matthieu Blazy: a slinky, one-shouldered gown that sat open on the torso. This easy glamour, it seemed, was Robbie’s new look.

Since then, Robbie has been tapping into a new fashion vein, one that feels equally as polished, but more importantly, current. She has a particular soft spot for Blazy’s Bottega. The label’s woven ‘Intrecciato’ Cassette bags are an everyday staple; Robbie’s been spotted slinging the satchel in kermit green and terracotta, and wearing Blazy’s autumn/winter ’22/’23 optical illusion jeans: trompe l’œil leather, dyed to imitate mid-wash denim. Most recently, she championed another brand du jour, sporting a hooded mini dress from Pieter Mulier’s Alaïa at the Los Angeles premiere of Babylon.

This is not to say, of course, that Robbie hasn’t always dressed well. Even in Chanel she pushes the sartorial envelope. Take for example her mummy-like jumpsuit at the premiere of The Suicide Squad, or her flared pant suit at the WSJ Magazine 2022 Innovator Awards, layered over a sheer black blouse. The press tour for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood also saw Robbie take cues from fashion history, paying homage to Sharon Tate with face-framing braids, Go-Go boots and modish rosettes.

Then, of course, there was the Barbie press tour. Where even in varying shades of pink, Robbie was ever the stylish dresser. Who knew there were so many ways to wear the world’s favourite toy’s most well-known shades? From vintage looks in Hervé Leger, to the familiar pink from Pierpaolo Piccioli at Valentino, Robbie cut a still elegant figure.
